Outdoor Learning

Located in scenic Angus, set amid 150 acres of spectacular woodland, Rossie is uniquely placed to offer a wide range of Outdoor Learning. Our extensive grounds provide opportunities for environmental activities, adventure activities and orienteering courses.  The grounds and gardens also enable young people to undertake hands on experience in estate and environmental work.

Outdoor Learning offers meaningful learning
Our Outdoor Learning programme links with the four capacities within the Curriculum for Excellence which are:-
  • Responsible Citizen
  • Effective Contributor
  • Successful Learner
  • Confident Individual
Outdoor Learning offers all the above and more through real meaningful learning, in real locations with real consequences. Young people taking part in our programmes have the chance to take part in several national accreditation awards, and also to undertake the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. We further encourage our young people to complete an accredited First Aid programme, essential for community living as well as the great outdoors.
The programmes run all year round and we change activities with the seasons and weather.  Activities are planned and structured to be flexible and child centred, providing many cross curricular links with subjects such as Maths, History and English.
Our location in Scotland provides easy access to a wide range of adventure locations in Angus and Tayside. Activities include Coasteering, Gorge Walking, Mountain Biking, Climbing, Hill Walking, Skiing and Canoeing. They’re available within both the school timetable as well as in young people’s leisure time, and they are a key element of the Rossie experience to young people in the Open Campus.
Outdoor Learning programmes present new challenges to young people who may find it difficult or perhaps even uncomfortable. But by working through these situations in difficult conditions, they will in turn have huge successes with feelings of real accomplishments in what they have achieved.
All of the activities on offer are led by the staff who carry national awards for instruction, but more than this, they carry many years experience in working with young people who need a great deal of support. Every activity is risk assessed and all activities are carried out with the highest safety standards.
